When senior Rivaldo Mitei has an important assignment to complete, he said he often heads to LHS’ media center. Since he has senior privilege during A4, he said it is a convenient place to do his schoolwork.

“I like the media center now because before it felt too much like a classroom setting, and now I feel like I’m doing work in my living room,” Mitei said.

The renovation started in July and lasted all summer long. While the bookshelves have not yet been installed and not all of the furniture has arrived, Mitei said he likes the media center’s modern look.

While the space used to consist of four rooms—the main library, media center, anime room and kitchen—it now has three smaller breakout rooms in addition to a large media center and kitchen. Library technician Mrs. DeForge said the anime room will be added at a later date and will be located in the same spot as it had been previously.

DeForge said the media center is meant to have multiple purposes.

“There are many things that happen in the media center. Classes come up here to finish their work, research papers are done here [and] there are many workshops that occur as well. Every year, two poetry slams are held here. I also have [an annual] scavenger hunt,” DeForge said.

DeForge said the furniture is expected to arrive within the next month. She said as time goes on, decorations will also be added. However, the Apple desktop computers that used to be in the media center will not be returning. Instead, they have been replaced with touchscreen Dell laptops.

DeForge said students who prefer the desktop computers will have to get used to the laptops.

“We are going forward in technology,” DeForge said. “It was an adjustment at first for the students because we have been an Apple school using iPads and Macs.”

Senior Rachel Bocage, who uses the media center during senior privilege to do schoolwork, said she prefers the previous desktop computers to the new laptops.

“I don’t like the change because we have always had Apple technology. Every computer room has Mac desktops, and we all have iPads,” Bocage said.

She said the only feature she likes about the new laptops are the touchscreens.

“It’s a little annoying because the Dell laptops are nothing like the Mac desktops we have been using for years,” Bocage said.

Like Bocage and Mitei, senior Larissa Sales said she goes to the media center during senior privilege to get her work done.

“It’s great for when you have to read because the media center is a quiet and peaceful place,” Sales said.

She said she likes the new media center because it is modern and spacious.

“The best feature of the media center [are] the smart boards they got for the main and other rooms. New furniture would make the media center even better,” Sales said.

DeForge said she wants the media center to be an inviting place for various uses. She said her favorite aspect of the media center are the breakout rooms.

“More than one person or group may need to use the space. With three breakout [rooms], many people can use the media center at once,” DeForge said. “I want it to be welcoming for all of the various uses it offers. People come here for many reasons. I want to be able to provide them with the tools and technology they need in a comfortable atmosphere.”
