The Super Bowl is known for its great commercials. This year, however, most fell short of being attention-grabbing or laughter-inducing. Despite the generally lackluster ads, seven commercials stood out:

NFL 100

The two-minute advertisement begins with a scene at a black tie event celebrating the NFL’s 100th season. After a golden football falls from above the enormous cake, dozens of former and current professional football players erupt in a frenzy. With impossible catches falling into tables, outrageous passes flying across the room and rough tackles plowing into the decorations, the NFL takes the cake for the best Super Bowl commercial.

Doritos Flamin’ Hot Nachos

This upbeat ad communicates the feeling one receives after trying the new Doritos flavor. It features a very energetic Chance the Rapper freestyling in a modern remix of the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want it That Way.” Filled with bright, colorful cars and an upbeat sound, the product successfully captures viewers’ attention in this short and sweet commercial.

Pepsi

Set in a casual restaurant, this ad shines with its numerous celebrity appearances. After opening with comedy actor Steve Carell defending the integrity of Pepsi, the camera pans to rapper Lil Jon who is at the counter saying his catchphrase “Okay.” Meanwhile, rapper Cardi B walks through the door and says, “Okur.” In this humorous commercial, Pepsi proves it is more than just okay.

Verizon

This emotional commercial focuses on Los Angeles Chargers Head Coach Anthony Lynn as he is meeting the first responders who saved his life over a decade ago. Concluding with the warm message, “First responders answer the call. Our job is to make sure they can get it,” Verizon creates a mood of trust and gratitude.

Avocados from Mexico

This comedic ad features a Human Canine Show known as “Top Dog.” In this competition, the ownerswho are groomed to match the appearance of their dogsstrive to follow through on basic commands like “sit” and “shake.” Actress Kristin Chenoweth serves as the celebrity judge who grants the grand prize of several avocado-filled dishes paired with a trophy overflowing with guacamole.

Andy Warhol

This inaudible ad features Andy Warhol, who died 32 years ago, eating a Burger King Whopper. As viewers watch the short clip of the late American artist dipping the greasy food in ketchup, they are presented with the message, #EatLikeAndy. This short yet sweet commercial captures a sense of nostalgia while promoting the classic burger.

Pampers

Singer John Legend takes a whiff of his child’s diaper. Quickly, the camera focuses on a bunch of dads with their newborns. They join Legend in singing about his baby’s stinky booty. Just when the commercial couldn’t get any cuter, viewers see singer Adam Levine strapping a diaper on his newborn daughter as he participates in the song. Pampers unites comedy and tenderness in this lighthearted commercial that focuses on the miracle of life.
