Top That! Donuts, which opened on March 2, is a family-friendly doughnut shop that offers desserts that are sure to leave you feeling full and satisfied.

Located on 8 Highland Cross in Rutherford, this adorable shop is brightly lit and filled with vibrant colors to catch the eye of any passerby. The shop’s walls are covered in drawings and coloring book-style pages on which customers have “designed” their own doughnuts. Near the front of the store, there is a table with toys for children to play with as they munch on their delicious desserts.

The shop is relatively small, but it is packed with tables. I was delighted when I walked in because I heard familiar pop music and saw dozens of different toppings from which to choose.

The most interesting part about the shop is the big machine behind the counter. What does this machine do, you might ask? Well, that is where the doughnuts are freshly made right in front of your eyes. Then, you can watch as the employee takes your hot doughnut and goes through the process of covering it with frosting and all sorts of toppings.

This is a truly unique establishment, as customers can enjoy the colorful decor and watch as their tasty treat gets made. However, the doughnuts themselves are the true highlight.

Since these doughnuts are reasonably priced at $1.79 each, you can try a bunch of them without breaking the bank. Just make sure you come with a big appetite because they will fill you up fast.

Having brought a friend, I was excited to split the doughnuts so I could try as many flavors as possible.

I started off with a good old-fashioned doughnut called The Sticky Fingers, which certainly stays true to its name. Covered in plain glaze, this simple doughnut was a good way to start the experience.

Next up was The French Toast. This delicious goodness is dipped in cinnamon sugar, drizzled in maple syrup and lightly dusted with powdered sugar. It tasted just as one might imagine. Warm and soft, it was the perfect combination of breakfast and dessert.

After that, it was on to The Pebbles & Bam Bam. With your choice of vanilla or chocolate frosting, The Pebbles & Bam Bam is covered in exactly what you might expect: Fruity Pebbles cereal. Crunchy and sweet, it is a childhood dream come true.

One doughnut I was not too fond of was The Aunt Ro Ro, which is dipped in chocolate frosting and has three sour gummy worms in the center. The Aunt Ro Ro is really nice in appearance, but it most definitely tastes strange, as the chocolate is chalky and does not combine well with the sour flavor that takes your palate on a not-so-fun ride.

When it comes to doughnuts, I can honestly say nothing can top Top That! Donuts. With its fun ambiance, proximity to Lyndhurst, reasonable prices andbest of alloutstanding doughnuts, there is no reason not to try it out. Your tastebuds will thank you.
