This article is part of The Lighthouse’s weeklong “The Power of Language” in-depth reporting series.

Croatian

“My mother’s side of the family is mostly from Croatia, and I would love to visit the country in my lifetime. Knowing the language would make the trip much more rewarding. Also, it’s a fairly uncommon language, meaning I could impress people with how worldly and informed I am.”

Mr. Belmont, English teacher

Dutch

“I want to learn Dutch because I’d like to go to Holland one day and speak it. Plus, I love how the language sounds.”

Vlada Karabynosh, freshman

French

“I want to vacation in France and be able to communicate and understand other people.” Jonathan Marinho, senior

German

“The German accent is super interesting, and it’s honestly just a really cool language to be able to speak.”

Kyle Henning, junior

Greek

“I would like to learn Greek because Greece is a beautiful country, and I appreciate the culture. I would love to travel there.”

Matt Derrig, junior

Italian

“Italian is such a beautiful, romantic and intricate language. I like learning languages, and I want to learn all of the Romance languages.”

Maria Gamez, sophomore

Latin

“Latin roots are used in a variety of languages, so learning the language would help with understanding and articulating other ones.”

Jesse Diaz, senior

Portuguese

“I want to learn Portuguese because it is similar to Spanish, which I already know, so it would be easier to learn a new language.”

Ana Altreche, freshman

Russian

“Russian is the most widely spoken native language in Europe and the most widespread language in Eurasia. It is also one of the most difficult languages to learn because of its Cyrillic alphabet, so learning it can challenge my learning capabilities.”

Alexis O’Rourke, sophomore

Spanish

“I would like to learn Spanish because it is one of the most commonly spoken languages. I would like to be able to talk to everybody in our surrounding community.”

Ms. Wise, choir teacher
