May 12 is recognized as International Nurses Day and National School Nurse Day. Therefore, there is no better day than today to recognize the crucial role nurses play in the healthcare industry. Nurses coordinate patient care and have the opportunity to work with patients alongside doctors. Additionally, nursing tends to be a stable career with faster-than-average job growth.

Although nursing is one of the most popular college majors, it is far from easy. Between classes, studying and hands-on learning, it requires dedication and attention to detail. I have seen this firsthand through my older sister Larissa who has been studying nursing at Rutgers-New Brunswick since 2019. She inspires me with her love for helping others and perseverance.

Covid-19 has affected the well-being and health of people across the world. It has overwhelmed many countries’ healthcare systems, and, of course, affects healthcare providers such as nurses fighting on the frontlines. The major issues nurses are currently facing is a critical shortage of nurses, beds and medical supplies, including personal protective equipment.

No one knows exactly what long-term consequences Covid-19 will have on the world or economy, but if there’s one job that’s completely safe, it’s nursing.

Hopefully, the pandemic has helped young people looking for a career to realize the positive impact they could make as nurses, particularly since there is currently a need for more of them. By pursuing a nursing degree, you will be able to improve not only others’ quality of life but also your own since you will be setting yourself up for a long and gratifying career.

Especially if you are able to enter the field rather quickly, there will be increased opportunity for higher wages. No one knows exactly what long-term consequences Covid-19 will have on the world or economy, but if there’s one job that’s completely safe, it’s nursing.

Any time is a good time to join the incredible people who make up the nursing workforce, and International Nurses Day and National School Nurse Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate not only practicing nurses but those who are working hard to prepare themselves to enter such a noble and necessary profession.
