Since its debut on July 25, 2017, Fortnite has risen to become a video game giant downloadable on IOS, PC, Playstation and Xbox. With its many game modes and new modes that come and go, the interactive survival game has become a popular phenomenon across the nation.

At first, not many people played Fortnite and those who did play the battle royale game mode had mixed emotions about it.

Junior Alyssa Engels said before playing the game, she had low expectations.

“When I first heard about it, I thought it was another dumb Xbox game because I can’t play Xbox, and I’m awful at it, but the phone is a lot easier. I play it like 20 times a day,” Engels said.

Engels said she recognizes that one’s love of Fortnite can lead to less communication.

“It used to bother me when I would be texting someone and they would not get back to me right away because they would randomly stop answering,” Engels said. “Now I play it, and I get that if you stop to text someone, you could die, and why would you want to start over?” Engels said.

Most people prefer to play Fortnite with their friends. The game can accommodate up to four players on the same team.

Freshman Yianni Lazaris said he usually plays with junior Kyle Bouteloupt, senior Nick Cutola and senior Jon Karlok and as a group of four in squads.

Lazaris said he finds playing Fortnite with his friends to be more fun and less stressful than playing alone.

“Usually when I’m home, the only thing I’m doing is playing Fortnite,” Lazaris said. “My friends are usually all on playing, and we like to win together.”

Fortnite remains a worldwide phenomenon because it is continuously evolving.

“The game makes changes and updates almost every week, which is nice ‘cause it’s always something new to look forward to and try out,” Lazaris said.

One of the latest updates suggested that a comet would fall out of the sky and land somewhere on the map, and users were led to believe it will strike Tilted Towers, the most popular spot on the map. The update was released on May 1, and this did not happen. Instead, the comet took out the neighboring Dusty Depot.

Junior Jillian Tkaczyk said if the comet had wiped out Tilted Towers, the game would have been changed forever because so many players visit Tilted Towers since it is almost dead center on the map. It is massive in size and has good loot such as guns, health amenities and ammunition.

“Tilted attracts 20-30 people every game with ease, and the map would be so much more cramped if it was gone,” Tkaczyk said.

Tkaczyk said she has grown addicted to the game.

“When you win, it’s the best feeling in the world. You feel like you’re the king of the world,” said Tkaczyk.
