On Dec 17, many Instagram users were outraged by a glitch that required them to swipe right instead of scrolling down. It even prompted #glitch to trend on Twitter, with some making jokes and others voicing their frustration.
Head of Product at Instagram Adam Mosseri, tweeted that the swipe-right glitch was a test of the new design that went a bit too far. However, Instagram’s Twitter account later tweeted that the test was a bug, contradicting what Mosseri had said previously.
Junior Kiara Salme, who uses Instagram when she gets bored with Snapchat, said when she saw the glitch, she was very confused and thought it was weird.
“I think they made this change because, since people like looking through other people’s stories, maybe Instagram wanted to see how they reacted by going side to side through posts.”
Many users noted the bug’s similarity to Instagram’s Stories, which allows users to click through posted photos. When Stories first came out, people blamed Instagram for stealing Snapchat’s method of clicking through photos, and the glitch seemed to push people further towards this theory.
Junior Kiara Acta uses Instagram every day and mainly just scrolls through her feed.
“They most likely wanted to try something new in hopes of getting a positive response, but they took the criticism and decided to change it back to normal,” Acta said.
After heaps of backlash from the Instagram community, the glitch was resolved.
Junior Laura Abreu, who created her Instagram account when she was in eighth grade, said the glitch caught her off guard, but she ended up preferring it because it was something different.
“I don’t think it was a glitch. I think they did that to see if we would like it, and because there were complaints, they decided to take it down,” Abreu said. “People don’t like new things if they’re not exactly needed.”
