Millions of people will be tuning in to watch the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams battle it out at Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, Georgia on Feb 3.
Along with the excitement of the game comes the anticipation of the halftime show, which will feature Big Boi, Maroon 5 and Travis Scott.
Maroon 5 is a three-time Grammy Award-winning pop band known for hits including “Girls Like You,” “One More Night,” “Payphone” and “Sugar.” The group has a massive social media presence with 6.9 million followers on Instagram and 14.7 million followers on Twitter.
Senior Larissa Sales, who said she plans to watch the Super Bowl with her family, said she is happy Maroon 5 was invited to perform.
“I used to listen to all their songs, and I think Travis and Maroon are perfect for the halftime show,” Sales said.
Rumors are circulating that Maroon 5’s performance may include “Sweet Victory” from the “Band Geeks” episode of “SpongeBob SquarePants.” This song would be a tribute to Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of the animated series, who died in 2018 at the age of 57.
There was a petition on change.org to include “Sweet Victory” in the halftime show, and as of Jan. 31, there were 1,190,591 signatures. Change.org originally listed a million signatures as the goal, but that number increased to 1.5 million after the initial goal was accomplished.
“It would be cool and very nostalgic to see them perform ‘Sweet Victory.’ I believe that many SpongeBob fans would love to see that,” Sales said.
Senior Anthony Sammarone is among those who signed the petition.
“I think it would be a great moment and great tribute for Stephen Hillenburg,” Sammarone said.
He said he is most excited about Scott’s presence at the Super Bowl because Scott is one of his favorite rappers.
“I can’t wait to see his performance and what he has planned. I hope he performs ‘Sicko Mode’ and ‘Goosebumps,’ my favorite songs,” Sammarone said.
A Grammy-nominated rapper who is best known for his 2018 album “Astroworld,” Scott has four studio albums. With 14.8 million followers on Instagram and 4.77 million followers on Twitter, Scott is a big name in the hip hop industry.
Senior Brian Arroyave said Scott’s popularity is the reason he was asked to perform at the Super Bowl.
“I believe they wanted Travis to perform because of his social status in the world and the world of music,” Arroyave said.
Arroyave, whose favorite song by Scott is “Sicko Mode,” said he plans to watch the Super Bowl with his friends.
“I think that Travis is a good fit for the Super Bowl because he is such an icon amongst the people and has a very good fanbase behind him,” Arroyave said.
Senior Tim Ozturk, who is a fan of both Scott and Big Boi, said he is excited to see these artists perform at the same event.
“I’ve never seen them both perform together. I think it will be very cool, and I cannot wait,” Ozturk said.
Big Boi is best known for being a member of American hip hop duo Outkast. He has accumulated over 911,000 followers on Instagram and over 1.23 million followers on Twitter.
“I expect this game to be close and very entertaining. The halftime show is worth watching because you can enjoy a performance from your favorite artists with your friends or family,” said Ozturk.
