On April 2, the boys volleyball team opened its season with a home win against Roselle Catholic High School. This match was played and completed in two sets, as LHS won the first set with a score of 25-19 and the second set with a score of 25-13. This win helped the team move towards its goal of finishing the season with a winning record.
Senior captain Matt Martone said the win against Roselle Catholic was the perfect way to start the season.
“It gives us a lot of motivation going into the rest of the season,” Martone said.
He said he was happy with his personal performance but is always looking to improve.
“I always think I can do better. That’s just who I am. I’m never fully satisfied with myself, but I did get a lot of key digs and a couple of aces, so I’d say I did my job,” Martone said.
Another contributor to the winning game was junior Fernando Esteves, who said he loves his team’s effort and hustle on the court. He said the volleyball players did very well for their first game but, like Martone, Esteves still sees room for growth.
“The team needs to improve upon communication, especially the back row, because that’s where most of the balls go, and that is where our passers are located,” Esteves said.
One aspect of the game Esteves said he was very pleased about was the team’s ability to come back from a six point deficit in the first set. He said when the players were losing, they never got down on themselves and kept pushing for the lead.
“When we were losing, I was telling my teammates to… stay on their toes, make better passes and be ready for any ball to come their way,” Esteves said. “It felt good to come back in the first set to win the game, but at the same time, it was pretty disappointing because we should’ve never been losing in the first place. We just had to wake up and play better.”
Sophomore fan Rafaella Paes said the Golden Bears exceeded her expectations in their game against Roselle Catholic.
“Their games are very exciting, and from what I’ve seen, I think they’re going to go really far this year,” Paes said. “I would definitely describe the team as determined. You can tell that they always are focused and they work really hard all through the game.”
Paes said she loves attending LHS’ volleyball games because they are unpredictable.
“Volleyball is such a competitive sport, and it always keeps me on the edge of my seat because you never know what’s going to happen next,” Paes said.
She said she would encourage others to come out and support the volleyball players at their games.
“I think it’s super important for fans to cheer on the team because it helps to motivate them and encourage them to work harder in whatever sport they are playing,” Paes said.
The team’s next home game will take place on April 12 in the gym at 4 p.m. against Garfield High School.
