If you liked Disney’s new releases last year, you’re in for a treat with several long-awaited blockbusters. Disney’s upcoming live action movies are “Aladdin” (May 24), “The Lion King” (July 19) and “Mulan” (March 27, 2020). Its upcoming animated films are “Toy Story 4” (June 21) and “Frozen 2” (Nov. 22)
Senior Konrad Skwara said he plans on watching “Aladdin,” “Frozen 2,” “The Lion King” and “Mulan” because he wants to see how the films differ from the originals.
“I’m excited to see how ‘Frozen 2’ will continue the story of Anna, Elsa and company,” Skwara said.
He said by the looks of the trailers, it appears that the gang is going on a road trip where they will experience the wonders of autumn.
Skwara said he is also excited to see the live action version of “Mulan” because the animated movie is one of his favorites.
“I love the rebellious spirit that Mulan has and how she matured as a character,” Skwara said.
He said he likes the direction in which Disney films are moving.
“Present day Disney movies have started breaking the traditional norms of true love. We all grew up with [the] true love kiss that fixes all,” Skwara said. “Disney is moving away from the love and more into individual growth such as [in] ‘Moana.’”
Skwara said he prefers the animated movies over live action because Disney is able to bring true magic to the screen since there are no limits in animation.
Like Skwara, junior Jenna Freitas said she prefers animated Disney movies because the characters can do anything because they are cartoons.
Freitas said she plans on watching “Frozen 2” because she wants to see how Disney continues its storyline considering the previous film had an ending that offered closure. She said she is also looking forward to seeing “Toy Story 4.”
“I loved all the ‘Toy Story’ movies so far, and I’m sure this last one will be the best,” Freitas said.
Senior Grescia Aguilar is also a Disney fan who is looking forward to the upcoming releases. She said she keeps up with news about the company by following Disney on Instagram.
Aguilar said she plans to see all of Disney’s upcoming 2019 releases with her sister. Like Freitas, Aguilar said she is particularly excited to watch “Toy Story 4.”
“I want to see the next adventure [in] some of my favorite childhood characters,” Aguilar said.
She said when she was a child, her favorite Disney movie was “The Little Mermaid,” and her favorite Disney characters are Moana from “Moana” and Belle from “Beauty and the Beast.”
“They are both princesses who derail from the stereotype of waiting for men to save them,” Aguilar said. “They are both smart [and] witty, and the adventures they embark on are led by them.”
Aguilar said she has noticed the evolution of female characters in Disney movies.
“If someone compares ‘Snow White’ and ‘Zootopia,’ it’s clear to see that one only wishes to please the imagination of children, while the other wished to teach them an underlying lesson,” said Aguilar.
