The Monthly Pessimist: Your college dream will cost a lot of green

College is mad fat expensive. It’s the most money you’ll ever spend for something that requires so much time and effort. This leaves me wondering: Is college even worth it.

College degrees are not as valuable as they once were. Today, almost everyone has one, and it is still difficult to find a well-paying job that you love. Adding to this frustration is the fact that there are people who are making millions of dollars as Instagram models, YouTubers and even gamers. This causes college graduates who are not nearly as successful and making far less money to look at their degrees with anger and bitterness.

Don’t get me wrong, college can still be worthwhile. College offers classes that suit individual interests, and it comes with more independence, parties and convenient on-campus housing. It’s a great way to spend one’s first four years of adulthood at the low cost of a kidney and a few kneecaps.

Colleges keep raising their tuition, taking advantage of students, because they know a college degree is a necessity for most jobs. Tuition, which often goes as high as $50,000, is insane, particularly considering most college freshmen don’t even know what they want their careers to be and therefore aren’t even sure they’ll ever be able to make the money to pay back their loans. Nothing is promised after college, but students still fork over hundreds of thousands of dollars for a piece of paper and a gamble on their future.

Just dorming on campus costs about ten grand, which will get you a tiny room that you’ll have to share with at least one other person and a bathroom that the whole floor uses.

Yes, it is way cheaper to commute, but not all colleges are close by and have ample parking. I’m hardly on time for my classes at LHS, and I only live eight blocks away. So, it’s unrealistic to think that I, and the majority of students who are like me, would make it to class when we’d be commuting upwards of an hour.

College is crazy expensive, and I have no clue how I’m going to afford it, but it’s going to be a lot of fun, so who cares, right?! Or at least that’s what I keep telling myself….
