The Golden Bears celebrated a major victory on Oct. 11, when the football team defeated Harrison High School 54-7 at an away game. This marked the players’ biggest win of the season up until that date and pushed them to a 5-0 record.

Defensive end sophomore Angel Velez said the Harrison game was especially significant.

“They went from hunters to being hunted,” Velez said.

Velez said he regards his teammates as a family.

“The team all have the same goal, and that is to leave with a ring by the end of the year,” Velez said. “This season was a better [season] because it was more challenging.”

Coach Tuero also described the team as a family because the players have grown together, and he has known them for years. There are 50 players on the team, and only 16 graduated last year.

“They go through the good and bad together, but at the end of the day, it’s all love,” Tuero said.

He said his coaching philosophy is to encourage his players to get better every day and believing that the structure of the program will lead to their improvement. He said the Harrison win as lopsided.

“We could have scored 70 points if we wanted to,” Tuero said.

He said his expectations for this season are to win the league and states. The team already won the Liberty League division title for the first time in 22 years.

Freshman Tiye Allen has been on color guard for two years and has watched every game this year.

“It’s very exciting to see them play,” Allen said.

“The football team is very united in their plays and during the game.”

She said every time she watches the Golden Bears on the fields, she sees them getting better and better.

“The football team is very united in their plays and during the game,” Allen said. “It was great because they made another defeat.”
