COVID-19 has affected over 3.3 million people worldwide and his inspired fear among those who worry they or their loved ones will catch the deadly virus.

It can take up to two weeks for symptoms of the highly contagious virus to appear, and some remain asymptomatic, meaning that people can spread it without knowing it.

Because this virus is so aggressive and there is no known cure, the elderly and those with underlying conditions, such as those who are immunocompromised or with significant liver disease, need to take extra precautions.

Knowing that my grandparents are in a high-risk category for contracting COVID-19 due to their age is very upsetting. I worry about them every day, especially knowing that they are leaving their home to purchase essential items like groceries.

I’m also concerned about my own well-being since my severe asthma puts me in a high-risk category. If I were to contract COVID-19, I would have a very low chance of survival. For this reason, my whole family has to take extra precautions when going out so that they minimize the risk of catching the virus and passing it on to me.

My whole family wears masks when going out in public. We disinfect every package or mail we receive, and we make sure to keep our distance when we go on walks. When I get home after being out in public, and I am careful not to touch anything and immediately wash my hands.

I am doing my best to keep myself safe, but it upsets me when I hear that people are still acting selfishly by going out in public for non-essential reasons and failing to take proper social distancing precautions. This is why around 2,500 New Jersey residents are receiving positive test results daily.

For the sake of all people, but especially those who are at high-risk due to age and underlying conditions, everyone must do his or her part to slow the spread of the virus and continue flattening the curve.

Seeing what’s going on, we should unite as a country and help the people that can’t help themselves. Just know that we are all going through this and everyone has there own part and we need to remember there is light at the end of the tunnel.
