There have been a lot of downsides to the coronavirus, but there have been some positive changes during this time as well. In this “Faces in the Crowd” feature, The Lighthouse asked students and teachers what aspect of life during the pandemic they hope will remain.

Bella Banuls, junior
“I’m gonna miss not having to miss school when I’m sick because you can just go on Zoom for classes instead of having to worry about missing a lesson.”

Averi Carmeci, junior “Honestly, I’d much rather the half days we have now rather than the full days of school.”

Mr. Carucci, math teacher
“I’m going to answer this from a runner’s perspective. I like the fact that races have staggered starts now. What I mean is that traditionally everyone would line up at the start, the gun would go off and everyone would go. Since Covid, most races have been doing staggered starts where they let [approximately] two runners start, and then ten seconds later, two runners start and then ten seconds later two runners start, etcetera. People that start earlier aren’t given an advantage because everyone has a chip, so the timer can calculate when a person started and when they finished in order to get their time. Anyways, the short answer to the question is: I like staggered starts.”

David Fonseca, senior
“I’m gonna miss talking to my friends online more.”

Elise Ferschweiler, freshman
“I hope that people continue to be considerate of others. The pandemic forced us to think of other people’s personal space and keep everybody safe. A lot of people were put in tough situations, and I hope the patience we learned this past year doesn’t go.”

Mr. Raguseo, Italian teacher
“I hope that people will continue to respect other people’s space—not necessarily staying 6 feet apart—when this crisis ends. I also don’t want to go back to making photocopies, so I will keep my worksheets, handouts and assessments digital. I also hope that offices, stores, schools and other populated places continue to provide hand sanitizer at entrances and exits.”
