“Rio” is 3D computer-animated musical adventure comedy film that was released in theaters on April 15, 2011 and is now available for streaming on Hulu.

This film follows the adventures of Blu, a flightless Spix’s Macaw who acts more like a human than a bird. Even though it is over a decade old, it is worth viewing this holiday season because it is guaranteed to provide enjoyment for your whole family. The movie is an hour, 36 minutes in length, and every second counts and is sure to hold your attention.

Blu’s character is brought to life by the comical voice of actor Jesse Eisenberg, who is best known for his role as Lex Luthor in “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice.”

The many different birds who helped Blu find his way in the movie are played by George Lopez, as Rafael, Will.i.am as Pedro and Jamie Foxx as Nico, to name a few.

Blu’s Journey begins when he and his human friend Linda travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to save his species. There, he meets Jewel, whom he believes to be the last female Spix’s Macaw. Her determination and feistiness prompt their bumpy adventure because Jewel convinces Blu to escape with her. Blu and Jewel are both dynamic characters who change during the course of the movie. Jewel becomes more warmhearted and caring, while Blu becomes more adventurous and social. It is inspiring to see him gain confidence as he stops being so timid and learns to fly.

Their escape from the lab led both Macaws to be captured by smugglers, who chained the two birds together. While Jewel’s goal is to become a free bird, Blu has another agenda, which is to be reunited with his friend Linda.

Viewers also get to experience the streets of Rio De Janeiro, with its famous carnival and colorful costumes worn for the street festivities.

Of all the obstacles they encountered, I most enjoyed the scene when the birds and the monkeys go to battle. This scene is funny because each bird wins against the monkeys by using its beak, foot, fruit or a chain. Jewel spits at the monkey, and Blu attempts to do the same, except his spit just hangs there and everyone in the scene stares at him. This scene is hilarious and captivating because viewers will be rooting for the birds.

The storyline is terrific, but an added bonus is the music and setting.

The movie begins with the song “Mas Que Nada” by Sergio Mendes featuring the Black Eyed Peas, which is a catchy, Brazilian tune that will have you wanting to get up and dance. This song is repeated later on when Blu tries to find Jewel, who is captured in one of the floats. His attempt leads him to be captured along with his other friends who are helping him out.

Viewers also get to experience the streets of Rio De Janeiro, with its famous carnival and colorful costumes worn for the street festivities. At the end of the film, the beauty of nature is showcased with animations of the Amazon Rainforest.

“Rio” is packed with fun, but that does not overshadow a strong moral worldview with elements of courage, friendship, heroism and sacrifice. It even includes a mild allegory of God’s pursuit of his lost children, as Blu’s owner Linda searches for her lost bird.

“Rio” provides continuous entertainment. There is never a dull moment in this fun-filled movie. With realistic animations, thought-provoking themes and engaging characters, this feel-good film is not to be missed.
