Picking the right college can be a stressful and lengthy process. Here are eight factors to consider as you make this big decision:

1. Major and program

Make sure the college you select offers the major that will benefit you professionally. For instance, if you want to become a lawyer and that school has a renowned pre-law program, that is a good sign that the school will have the resources to help you succeed. College is very expensive nowadays, so it is important that you invest in a degree that can help you in your career.

2. Living situation

Do you plan on living in a dorm or commuting? Most times, students already have an idea of where they want to live before applying to college. However, that can very easily be altered based on the scholarship package a student receives. A major reason students live at home and community to school is to save money. Sometimes financial aid can assist you and your family with the financial burden associated with housing, but that is not always the case.

3. Scholarships and financial aid

Plenty of schools are generous with grant money and loans they offer to students, but there are also plenty of schools that are not so generous. This is something that every student needs to discuss with their parents and a financial advisor. Factoring cost into your college decision can help you and your family avoid accruing debt.

4. Interests and opportunities

Do not underestimate your interests and opportunities. It is important to look into the different mentorship programs that colleges offer as well as study abroad programs if that interests you. Colleges usually offer a lot of opportunities, but some will be better tailored to your interests, so do your research.

5. Feeling of belonging

Visit each college you are considering and take the time to learn about the school and talk to students while you are there. Ask yourself, “Can I see myself here?” You are making a big decision and you should feel at home in the place where you will spend the next four or more years of your life.

6. College life

Colleges offer a variety of clubs and programs that help students make friends and develop new skills. Maybe you are interested in Greek Life, or maybe you really like football games, so you want to go to a college with a big football team. Intramural sports are great too, and that may be worth considering. Having fun at school will benefit your mental health, which, in turn, can improve your performance in your classes.

7. The little things

Consider the perks that colleges offer their students. Excellent food quality, free parking and a good location can make a big difference in a student’s experience. Maybe you like the size of the school or the layout o the campus. Perhaps the school has a nice gym, and you are passionate about working out. All of those small details become important as you make your final decision.

8. Big picture

No single factor should dictate your college decision, and no school is perfect. Recognize that college is a time to invest in yourself, and consider what your priorities are and what you need to be happy as an undergraduate and beyond.

Collegebound high school seniors have tough choices to make, but hopefully, these tips will help you make the best decision possible.
