One of the best-kept secrets is the joy of a winter vacation.

According to askwonder.com, 23% of Americans prefer to go on vacation during the winter rather than the summer months, but that does not mean you should rule out winter travel.

Most people travel during the summer, making it way more expensive. Round-trip flights to Europe in January and February cost $600-800, which is more than a $1,000 savings compared to the summer months.

Similarly, round-trip flights to Asia cost about $300 more in the summer than in other seasons.

One of the best aspects of traveling during the winter are the seasonal festivities.

There is also more flexibility when booking flights and hotels. However, this all depends on where you are traveling.

Another advantage of traveling in the winter is that most destinations are less crowded. There will be fewer tourists, so it is easier to enjoy activities without worrying about waiting in lines or being surrounded by a lot of people.

Most people like traveling in the summer because of the warm weather, but if you are going somewhere with a warmer climate, it is nice to get away from the cold of a New Jersey winter. Honolulu, Hawaii; the Maldives in the Indian Ocean and  St. Lucia in the Caribbean are good places to travel to if you want to travel somewhere with warmer weather.

One of the best aspects of traveling during the winter is the seasonal festivities. During Christmas and New Year, people can observe seasonal holiday decorations. For example, Germany is known for Christmas markets, one of the largest and oldest being the Leipzig Christmas Market, which has more than 250 stalls and a massive spruce Christmas tree. Those visiting the market can expect delicious food and impressive performances. Likewise, tourists in France can enjoy ornate holiday light displays while they window shop at BHV Marais, Le Bon Marché, Le Printemps and Galeries Lafayette.

Furthermore, there are plenty of fun outdoor activities to try if you are traveling to a country such as Canada, Norway and Switzerland, which have cold climates in the winter. You can go ice skating, play in the snow, go sledding, ski or snowboard.

Lyndhurst Public School students have over a week off in late December into early January and a week off in February. They and their families should take advantage of these opportunities to visit domestic and international locations. So if you are itching to travel, don’t wait another minute. Start planning your winter getaway today.
