Netflix viewers got a special treat just in time for Valentine’s Day with the release of the slow-burn romantic series “One Day.” This 14-episode limited series captures viewers’ hearts with its complex characters, intriguing plot and unexpected ending.

The show, which is mostly set in London, England, was released on Feb. 8 and has a fascinating premise. It follows the 20-year relationship between Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) with each episode representing the same day, July 15, which is St. Swithin’s Day, during a different year. According to traditional folklore, the weather on St. Swithin’s Day will remain for the next 40 days.

Dexter and Emma’s relationship starts with a failed one-night stand following their university graduation party. Although they have an uncomfortable start, they end up making a meaningful connection through a conversation about their futures. In the years that follow, they weave in and out of each other’s lives as friends, partners and everything in between.

Dexter and Emma have feelings for each other, but they say they are just friends because of their struggles to express their emotions. Dexter has the reputation of being a playboy, but Emma wants a real relationship. Therefore, they pursue relationships with other people while secretly longing for each other.

Not only is their relationship on a roller coaster, but their lives are too. Emma wants to change the world through her writing, but this does not work out, as her plays are unsuccessful. This causes her to take a job as a server at a Mexican restaurant. In contrast, Dexter is blossoming in the public eye as a television host and cruises through life on his good looks and his family’s wealth. However, as the episodes and years go by, the tables turn.

Emma and Dexter’s relationship reflects both the beauty and harshness of life.

While Dexter’s wealth puts him out of touch with most viewers, Emma is a relatable character. Like many young people, she lacks confidence and takes an interest in someone who is unattainable.

The show is based on David Nicholls’ 2009 award-winning novel of the same name. In 2011, it was adapted as a movie starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. The show is an upgrade from the movie because it goes more in-depth about Emma and Dexter’s personal lives. These details bring the characters to life for the viewers.

“One Day” is a good recommendation for those who are fans of “Normal People,” which can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video and Hulu. The shows have similar plots in that they each follow the protagonist’s relationships and show how a lack of communication can ruin the connection between people who love each other.

Emma and Dexter’s relationship reflects both the beauty and harshness of life. Their bond grows as they see each other in so many stages of their lives, and it is touching to see them appreciate each other as they mature.

The show is perfect for a teenage audience because it imparts life lessons about love, work and family.

It is also perfect for binge-watching, with episodes ranging from 19-38 minutes. Although the episodes are fairly short, the fascinating characters and sentimental ending leave a lasting impact on viewers.
