The boys volleyball team began its season on April 1 with a 2-0 win at a home game against St. Mary High School of Rutherford.
As of April 16, the team’s record was 4-2.
In his second season on varsity, sophomore libero Maksym Dmochowski said his goal is for the team to have a stronger season than last year, which ended in a 7-15 record.
“I expect us to definitely be better than last year and hope we can get further in the state tournament,” Dmochowski said.
He said to make progress, the players need to work harder in practice.
“We need to improve on setting and hitting because that is probably the most important skill in volleyball, and that is what will win us games,” Dmochowski said.
Senior opposite hitter and captain Matthew Slaby, who is in his third year on varsity, said he enjoys his position because it capitalizes on his natural strengths.

“I am [left-handed], and for [this] position, it is easy to excel when you are left-handed,” Slaby said.
He said the team is capable of winning its section.
“We have the same team coming back as last year, so we should be able to do big things,” Slaby said.
Like Slaby, junior outside hitter Robert Curcio, who has been on varsity since his sophomore year, said he sees potential in the team.
“We have been preparing with practice and going over our rotations,” Curcio said.
He said each player contributes different skills to the team.
“We have a lot of good hitters, a lot of good back row players and a lot of good setters,” Curcio said. “Our team has almost everything you need.”
