After seniors commit to a college or university, they may be asking themselves, “What’s next?” Transitioning from high school to college requires a series of serious decisions and actions.

Once seniors graduate from high school, colleges will require them to submit an official high school transcript proving they have graduated. Other paperwork that needs to be submitted before the college’s stated deadline includes financial aid forms and an application for housing.

Health and well-being are paramount, so students should fill out necessary health forms and submit proof of health insurance as mandated by the college. They should also familiarize themselves with immunization requirements and health services on campus.

Another aspect of the transition to college is orientation, which is a student’s introduction to life at the postsecondary school. Generally, new students will use that time to schedule classes, meet classmates, set up a college email and visit support offices like advising and counseling.

College orientations can be single-day events or multi-day visits. Some schools host their college orientations the summer before classes start, though others offer them at earlier dates.

Students should not procrastinate when it comes to working out the details of living on campus.

Students should not procrastinate when it comes to working out the details of living on campus. They should confirm room assignments, talk to their roommates and choose a meal plan. Students should also pick up dorm room essentials and find out if items such as a microwave, refrigerator or mirror will be provided by the college.

If students intend to bring their cars to campus, they should find out where they can park and inquire about whether permits are needed. Some schools require payment for parking, so students should look into that as well.

Preparing for the upcoming semester goes beyond class registration. It’s about laying the groundwork for a successful college journey. Therefore, students should select courses that meet their academic goals and fulfill their program requirements. If needed, students should seek guidance from an academic advisor for effective course planning. Support services like tutoring and career counseling are valuable as well because they help students make the most of their time in college.

Additionally, it is essential to prepare academically by reviewing any recommended reading materials or online resources provided by the college. This can help students navigate the campus and choose a major.

College offers more than just academics. It is an opportunity to explore new interests. Therefore, students could research clubs and activities to enrich their experience, build skills and create connections

Finally, seniors should take time to relax and enjoy the excitement of starting a new chapter in their lives. They should be proud of all they have achieved and celebrate those milestones with family and friends.

College is a time for growth, so students should be excited about the journey ahead while approaching their to-do list responsibly.  With careful planning, detailed preparation and well-deserved breaks, LHS graduates will be equipped to make the most of their first year in college.
