Denim-on-denim looks were a widespread trend at the 2024 New York Fashion Week, which took place in New York City from Sept. 6-11. With bold displays of denim looks from Jeffrey Rudes’ brand L’Agence and Jase Siskin’s Cinq à Sept, and many more, denim took the stage as one of the most striking fashions in the 2024 show.
Double denim, also known as the Canadian Tuxedo, has been on and off for years. Some feel that if denim pieces are washed differently or are different colors, they clash against each other. Meanwhile, others feel it is a unique and chic form of expression if done correctly.
The question is, how is the Canadian Tuxedo done correctly?
Taking a step back to 2022, Julia Fox and Kanye West made one of their first appearances together at Paris Fashion Week. Fox introduced a new fashion staple after she appeared in Schiaparelli’s renowned denim jacket inspired by Madonna’s Jean Paul Gaultier top she wore on her “Blonde Ambition” tour, with matching pants from Roseberry and denim boots designed by Diesel. To no surprise, West appeared in arguably his favorite designer, Balenciaga, in a matching denim jacket and jeans.
Wearing multiple denim pieces at once can cause them to overpower one another, and the outfit can appear to lack depth since it only consists of denim.
Fox and West’s appearance caught the attention of several magazines. Specifically, VOGUE magazine featured an article about the new denim fashions they sported.
Similarly, this September, VOGUE reported that the frequent appearance of double denim looks from high-scale designers at this year’s New York Fashion Week influenced denim’s comeback.
Rudes’ L’Agence, a New York Denim brand, made its runway appearance with unique and striking denim pieces. With designs ranging from matching bedazzled denim skirts and jackets to uniquely shaped denim jumpsuits, L’Agence’s denim pieces were captivating. The designs embody modernity, as they are intricately designed and unlike any other.
Cinq a Sept by Jane Siskin also featured a significant amount of double denim. Unlike Rudes’ vivid designs, Siskin took a classic approach, pairing her designs with chic denim jackets and classic bell-bottom jeans, even layering the jackets with soft brown jackets to coincide with autumn.
Although many other designers participated in the denim-on-denim trend, these two designers’ interpretations of denim stood out because they took classic Canadian Tuxedos and added a luxurious feel to them by pairing them with unique pieces that enhanced the denim.
So, should you embrace the denim-on-denim trend?
I love a good pair of straight-leg mom jeans, and sometimes, I even bring skinny jeans back into my wardrobe. However, I cannot say I have ever been a big fan of denim-on-denim. Wearing multiple denim pieces at once can cause them to overpower one another, and the outfit can appear to lack depth since it only consists of denim. Denim should be paired with a solid color, or even a bold pattern to stand out against it. In terms of the Canadian Tuxedo, it is not a frequent trend in my closet.
However, based on the prevalence of the Canadian Tuxedo at New York Fashion Week, it is clear that double denim will be part of designers’ collections for seasons to come. So, if you want to match the styles of modern designers, consider making this trend part of your wardrobe.
