The pep rally on Sept. 27 marked a day of celebration for students and staff.
With a nearly three-year interruption from pep rallies at LHS, the last one being held in 2021, students were excited about the return of this tradition. While the event was a successful trial, there is still room for improvement.
Pep rallies are meaningful events. They foster community and school spirit, but right now, there are limited ways for non-athletes to feel involved.
At the pep rally, students on the bleachers showed their school spirit through the accessories distributed by the cheerleaders and by wearing other blue and gold items. Meanwhile, the band and chorale’s music served as enjoyable entertainment.

However, in terms of activities, there was no way for non-athletes to participate. In fact, the only competitive event was a 4×100 speed walk that was only open to varsity athletes.
According to retiring vice principal Mr. Venezia, the reason for the pause in pep rallies was that the event strayed from its mission to recognize athletes and show school spirit, instead becoming a competition between grade levels. Yet, if executed correctly, pep rallies can accomplish all of these goals.
Future pep rallies should also take more time to acknowledge junior varsity and freshman athletes, who walked onto the field but then joined their classmates in the bleachers. They reflect the future of the varsity teams, and their achievements deserve commendation.

Student Government Association advisor Mrs. Auteri said the school’s plan is to combine winter and spring sports into one pep rally that will take place between the two sports seasons. This is not ideal because it would shortchange these athletes compared to their fall sport counterparts. However, it may be necessary due to space limitations indoors.
Overall, students appreciate the chance to attend and participate in pep rallies. Now, it is just about making them the best they can be, so every Golden Bear, whether on the field or in the cave, feels included.
