Over the past four years, I have almost done it all. My involvements at LHS have led me to understand how important it is to take risks and try new activities, regardless of what grade you are in.
Joining the band allowed me to pursue friendships I have maintained to this day. The Music Department is a big, loving community, so it is easy to communicate and have fun in that environment.
This year, I took on the responsibility of being a section leader. In most schools, the band and marching band are two separate performance groups, but at LHS, all band members must march, so there are a lot of us. Even the cheerleaders involved in the band perform the halftime routine at football games.
As a sophomore, I joined the chorale, so I am now involved in both musical areas.
I love when the football games are at home because chorale teacher Ms. Wise messages our group on the BAND app at a certain call time, and we get to sing the alma mater and “The Star-Spangled Banner” for the football team and everyone in the stands.
I have a passion for singing. I love to sing any chance I get. This led me to participate in Lyndhurst’s Got Talent, the high school’s talent show. Last year, I sang “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor, and this year I performed “Vienna” by Billy Joel. I was nervous when I stepped onstage, but getting positive feedback from my family and peers brought me joy. I like that the Lyndhurst community can now recognize me for my voice.
Joining the band allowed me to pursue friendships I have maintained to this day.
Besides my participation in the Music Department, I have enjoyed being part of LHS’ sports teams. During my freshman year, I played basketball, flag football, softball and volleyball.
As a sophomore, I was the setter on the junior varsity volleyball team, which is an important position that never gets subbed out.
When I was let go from the volleyball team as a junior, I joined the cross country team for a year. I do not consider myself a runner, but I am glad I tried something new and had the experience.
I ended my junior year playing flag football in LHS’ club. I loved the thrill of running across the football field, but this year it will become an official sport, so I made the decision to play softball instead. I can’t wait to leave LHS playing my favorite sport for one final season.
As a senior, I have learned to enjoy being a teenager and the experiences it brings. I am glad I had the courage to put myself out there by joining a variety of activities.
I leave my readers with the following advice: You will only be in high school for a limited time, so have fun, get involved and make the most of the opportunities at LHS.
