A new tradition was born at LHS on Oct. 23 when members of the senior class signed the newly installed Senior Rock, which is located next to the Weart Ave. teachers’ parking lot.
What is now known as the Senior Rock was originally on the site of the new Lyndhurst Train Station.
Student Government Association advisor and art teacher Mrs. Auteri said she immediately became interested in acquiring the rock when she heard about it in June.
“The students get a sense of unity just by signing the rock… making this rock important to the senior year class.”
“Through the whole summer, I worked with [Department of Public Works Superintendent] Mr. [Richard] Gress back and forth, trying to get it moved,” Auteri said.
She said before the rock was transported she walked on LHS’ campus to decide the best place for it.
“No. 1 was the security, to make sure the camera was on it. The other part was that it had to be an area that people go to,” Auteri said.
She said with the help of NJ Transit workers and two Department of Public Works employees, the rock arrived on LHS’ campus at the end of August.
Senior Angelina Brennen said she is happy her class has a rock to call its own.
“The students get a sense of unity just by signing the rock… making this rock important to the senior year class,” Brennen said.
She said the underclassmen also appreciate the Senior Rock.
“They thought it was very cool,” Brennen said. “They were glad that the tradition was brought in before they were [seniors] so that they would have it too.”
Like Brennen, senior Isaac Camilo, the president of his class and the Student Government Association, said he appreciates the presence of the Senior Rock.
“It’s new this year, so hopefully, it’s a tradition for upcoming years,” Camilo said.
He said by signing the rock, the seniors have left a legacy.
“It’s something that now we can take pictures with after graduation, and it’s just another thing to be remembered by,” said Camilo.
