Navigating high school has been a journey of growth and discovery. The diverse classes at LHS have equipped me with academic knowledge and provided pathways for me to explore my interests.
As a senior, I’ve come to appreciate the power of education beyond books and tests, with four classes particularly impacting me and paving the way for my future.
Public speaking with Mr. Belmont has been a transformative class for me. This half-year elective pushes students out of their comfort zones, teaching them to voice their opinions and thoughts confidently and eloquently.
I registered for public speaking because it is a graduation requirement, but it quickly became one of my favorite classes. Through my speeches, I have become more self-assured and strengthened my communication skills.
Recently, I presented about why the trombone is the best instrument to learn to play. Even though I was talking about the trombone, my overall goal was to persuade my peers to try something new, even if it can be intimidating.
Next, there are the classes in the music wing. This is where the best classes in the school take place, and I am fortunate to be enrolled in the jazz band with Mr. Chwalyk and the chorale with Ms. Wise.
This is my first and final year in the jazz band. The course challenges me to play the most difficult music I have ever encountered since joining the concert band in fourth grade. I have also found it rewarding to expand my linguistic skills with the foreign language pieces performed by the chorale.
Finally, there is journalism with Ms. Pastor. This is a subject I’ve immersed myself in for all four years of high school. It is a great course because it offers opportunities for everyone. Whether a student enjoys writing, drawing, photography, broadcasting or podcasting, there is a spot for them in this welcoming community.
From taking photos to authoring the Senior Experience column, my love for images and words has given me a positive outlook on the process of creating The Lighthouse.
It has also allowed me to gain recognition on a state level, since my classmates and I earned a second-place award for in-depth reporting from the Garden State Scholastic Press Association in 2024.
Journalism is a great career to pursue, and even though I do not plan to become a journalist, taking this class has steered me in the right direction. It has improved my attention to detail, grammar and photography skills.

I am grateful for all the courses that have shaped me into the person I am today. They have made me more outgoing and brought me joy.
To all the students at LHS, I urge you to make the most of your classes, as they can help you blossom academically and personally. So, embrace the challenges, savor new experiences and take your classes seriously to become the best version of yourself.
