The baseball team is continuing its winning tradition this season with a record of 12-8 as of May 11.
Senior captain and first baseman Michael Longo, who has been on varsity for three years, said that due to the loss of nine graduating seniors last year, this season has been tougher than the previous one, which ended with a 19-9 record.
“Although we have big shoes to fill, we have the right guys to take over those roles and succeed at their job,” Longo said.
He said to continue winning, the players must improve their approaches when up at bat.
“The team has done a great job of sticking together. The mood in the locker room and in the fieldhouse is always a good time, but [we are] ready to get better and stack each day,” Longo said.
Junior left fielder and pitcher Ryli Pineiro, who has been on varsity for two years, said the players need to work on gaining confidence and playing with intensity.
“Everything is mental, so if you have a weak mind, you’re not going to be the best version of yourself,” Pineiro said.
He said that because the team is young, the players are determined to earn the respect of their adversaries and spectators.
“Everyone is doubting us this year and thinks because we lost a lot of guys, we aren’t going to be the team we were last year, so we have to prove everyone wrong,” Pineiro said.
Sophomore second baseman and pitcher Jayson Bellenger, who joined varsity this year, said the team has a lot of potential.
“Although we have big shoes to fill, we have the right guys to take over those roles and succeed at their job.”
“The team’s chemistry is high, and we’re competing with high competition. As a team, all we can do is get better and better every day and stay focused,” Bellenger said.
He said that with two years ahead of him as an LHS baseball player, he intends to keep building a strong bond with his teammates and improving through practice.
“I now know what it takes to be on a varsity team, and going forward, I have much to learn,” said Bellenger.
