My first year in high school was one of exploration, nervousness and, most of all, uncertainty. I did not know what to expect, but journalism was one class I was looking forward to.
In eighth grade, my English teacher, Mrs. Maloupis, suggested I enroll in the course because she knew I was interested in art. The idea of contributing my drawings to the school newspaper sounded amazing, so I asked her to recommend me.
I also wanted to become more informed about the world while participating in the spread of knowledge. My role as a staff member and now editor allowed me to do just that. With every illustration I created and article I authored for The Lighthouse, I got closer to becoming the artist and storyteller I want to be.
I did not know what to expect, but journalism was one class I was looking forward to.
As I complete my high school career, I am overcome with appreciation for my classmates and supportive teachers. I am especially grateful to my art and English teachers, who helped me develop my creative abilities and fostered my love for the arts.
Thank you to my family as well, especially my mom, for helping me when I struggled, reassuring me to stay true to myself and encouraging me to follow my passion.
Now it is time to take my ambition to the next level.
In the fall, I will be attending the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where I will be majoring in 3D Animation and Visual Effects. I hope to gain knowledge, develop my expertise and connect with professionals in the field to eventually become an animator who brings great ideas to life.
