I vividly remember watching American coming-of-age movies set in high schools with large cafeterias and walls lined with lockers. As a child living in Caserta, Italy, attending this type of school was nothing more than a dream. At the start of my freshman year, it became a reality.
My four years at LHS have exceeded my lofty childhood expectations.
Thanks to the constant encouragement from my family and the LHS community, along with my personal efforts, I became an Advanced Placement, dual enrollment and honors student, in addition to taking on leadership roles in The Lighthouse, the Italian Club and the World Language Honor Society. The knowledge I have acquired from these endeavors has enabled me to broaden my perspectives.
I could not have gained so much insight without my teachers. They have all encouraged me and believed in my ability.
Most importantly, I would like to thank my world language teachers, including former LHS Italian teacher Signora Clatworthy, for inspiring me to deepen my cultural knowledge and appreciation for my heritage. Thank you to Signorina Percontino, with whom I have worked to celebrate Italian culture through the expansion of the Italian Club. I also give thanks to Signor Raguseo, Señora Rojas and Ms. Veiga, who have guided me as I developed my desire to teach a world language.
My four years at LHS have exceeded my lofty childhood expectations.
I thank English teacher Mrs. Paluzzi, who provided me with the foundation to grow into an AP English student. She also allowed me to be her student teaching assistant this year, which has been an illuminating experience.
Additionally, I want to thank The Lighthouse adviser Ms. Pastor, who has been an exceptional English II-Honors and journalism teacher. Her care and attention to detail have led me to publish meaningful articles and earn an honorable mention award for in-depth reporting from the Garden State Scholastic Press Association.
As deputy editor of The Lighthouse this year, I had the pleasure of mentoring juniors Mariah Allen, Nicolle Alvarez and Gabriella Cerreta, who have made me proud with their diligence and excellent contributions to The Lighthouse.
In closing, all of these positive influences have contributed to my decision to study Italian and pursue teacher education at Montclair State University. Having drawn inspiration from my remarkable educators, I aspire to become an Italian teacher who empowers students to dream big and do their best.
Although my time at LHS is coming to an end, I will carry with me every connection and lesson learned as I navigate the challenges and opportunities that await me.
