The girls soccer team finished up a successful regular season on Oct. 29 with a record of 11-9 following a 0-3 loss in an away game against Pascack Valley High School.
Sophomore goalkeeper and forward Madison Goff, who joined varsity last year, said she attributes the team’s accomplishments to its defense, which performed especially well at the Sept. 10 away game against North Arlington High School.
“The back four [defenders] were very connected and well strung, helping us create passes and keep possession,” Goff said.
She said this year’s team is stronger compared to last year’s.
“The most challenging thing is balancing soccer with school and your social life because it is very time-consuming.”
“There’s definitely a lot more commitment and energy this year,” Goff said. “We actually want to show up to practice every day. We actually want to be doing what we’re doing.”
Senior captain and forward Zeynep Celik, who joined varsity her sophomore year, also said she recognizes a positive difference in this year’s team.
“Our chemistry is a lot better this year, and we’re all more excited to be there,” Celik said.
She said the players are all friends outside of sports and school, which enriches their bond. She said this connection is especially important since playing varsity soccer is a big commitment.
“The most challenging thing is balancing soccer with school and your social life because it is very time-consuming,” Celik said.
Coach Hykey, who has been coaching the team for 16 years, said one defining aspect of this season is the players’ joyful attitude.
“I believe they all do truly seem to enjoy what they do and spend time with each other,” Hykey said.
She said another positive attribute amongst the players is their tenacity.
“We are a tough team to play against. We make the other team work, and we always give them a battle,” said Hykey.
