Four minutes into a home game against Park Ridge High School on Oct. 15, senior captain Robby Dasler Jr. scored on a penalty kick to break LHS’ all-time boys soccer scoring record, which was previously held by Class of 2022 graduate Enrique Mutsoli.
During the game, which ended in a 5-1 victory for LHS, Dasler racked up four goals, surpassing Mutsoli’s record of 70 by three goals.
Dasler, a four-year varsity player who plays center attacking midfield, center back and striker, said he is proud of himself for reaching this milestone.
“I went to the fields many times during the offseason, went on runs after practices, and just pushed myself to my full potential,” Dasler said. “It is cool to make history in the same school most of my family and friends went to.”
Dasler credits his dad, who is an assistant coach for the team, for his achievement.
“My dad is definitely my biggest supporter. He calmed me down when I was stressed and always believed in me,” Dasler said.
“He was able to achieve this goal by pushing through many hardships and continuously being the great soccer player he is.”
After Dasler broke this record, he said he had his sights on another objective.
“I will never forget the feeling of finally breaking the career record, and hopefully at the end of the season, I will break the record for the most goals in a single season,” said Dasler.
On Oct. 25, at an away game against Watchung Hills High School, Dasler did just that. With one goal in the game, he broke the record for most goals in a season. The record was previously held by Mutsoli with 39 goals. At the end of the regular season, Dasler had 42 goals.
Junior center back Athan Hilas, who has been on varsity for three years, said he is not surprised Dasler has broken LHS’ records.
“He was able to achieve this goal by pushing through many hardships and continuously being the great soccer player he is,” Hilas said.
He said Dasler is an asset to the team because he remains composed during important games.
“As a person, he is very kindhearted and caring, and as an athlete, he is very motivated,” Hilas said. “The team greatly benefits from his actual abilities as a player, like his clinical finishing and his ability to see the field, but not only that, we also benefit from his positive attitude.”
Senior captain and goalkeeper Maksym Dmochowski, who has been on varsity for three years and has played soccer with Dasler since the age of five, also said Dasler is a standout player.
“His speed, strength and precision really are what separate him so far from the rest,” Dmochowski said. “He help[s] the team by not only scoring but also contributing to so many goals. He’s always helping everybody be better by setting the tone in practices and games.”
Following his record-breaking game, Dasler is being celebrated with a poster in his honor, which is hanging by the field at the Lyndhurst Recreation Center. He was also named The Bergen Record Male Athlete of the Week on Oct. 23.
Dmochowski said Dasler deserves the recognition he is receiving.
“Ever since we were kids, he was always working hard every day, just constantly getting better,” Dmochowski said. “It’s super cool to not only see a teammate have such an accomplishment, but it being one of my closest friends makes it much cooler.”
