Senior captain Chase Paglio, who has been on varsity since his freshman year, finished the regular season with 17 wins and nine losses.
Paglio said he enjoys the camaraderie on the wrestling team.
“I love everyone on my team, and I consider them to be family,” Paglio said. “I love the bus rides with my friends, winning matches and the hard practices.”
Paglio said his favorite memory from this season was winning his match on Feb. 10 at home against Dumont High School because it was senior night.
“It was my last match ever at home, and it really defined who I am as a wrestler. Even when I was down 13-1, I didn’t give up and pinned someone I had no reason beating,” Paglio said.
“Chase has been a great leader, and one I hope the underclassmen strive to resemble.”
Paglio said his biggest fan is his dad.
“Having my dad at my matches means so much to me,” Paglio said. “I have learned a lot from my dad. [He has taught me] to never give up and keep moving forward.”
Paglio said he takes inspiration from his coaches: Head Coach DeMarco and Coaches Morreale, Sanchez, Damien Weaver, Dylan Weaver and Scot Weaver.
“I strive to be like them, and I trust everything they tell me to do,” Paglio said.
Even though he does not plan to continue wrestling in college, Paglio said the sport has equipped him with lessons that will serve him well throughout his life.
“I learned that you have to push through adversity, and although things will be hard, it will pay off in the end,” Paglio said.
Head Coach DeMarco, who has served in this capacity for three seasons, said Paglio has always been exciting to watch.
“He never makes any victory or loss look boring. No matter what the score is, Chase truly wrestles until that final whistle,” DeMarco said.
He said he regards Paglio as a selfless athlete whose standout attributes are his leadership and mentorship.
“Along with that, Chase’s best qualities on the mat are his will to never give in or up. Chase never loses hope, no matter the situation,” DeMarco said.
He said he will miss Paglio’s presence next season.
“He is able to fill the room with his energy and light-hearted spirit,” DeMarco said. “Chase has been a great leader, and one I hope the underclassmen strive to resemble.”
Senior captain Nate Boyd, who has been on varsity for four years, said he and Paglio have a close relationship, especially because they have wrestled together since middle school.
Boyd said it will be tough no longer wrestling as teammates.
“I am going to miss having him as a practice partner and being on the same team together,” Boyd said.
He said Paglio especially excels in his cradles, flexibility and unpredictability.
“He pulls out [moves] I’ve never seen before, and he’s exciting to watch,” Boyd said. “He contributes to the team with his wins, and his success benefits us.”
