The compelling six-episode Spanish-language crime thriller series “That Night” follows three sisters whose relationship becomes strained in the hours after a horrific tragedy.
Based on the 2021 bestselling novel by Gillian McAllister, the series begins with a complex situation in which it seems that Elena Arbizu (Clara Galle) has unintentionally killed a police officer, hitting him with her car. She immediately calls her sisters, Cris (Paula Usero) and Paula (Claudia Salas), for help disposing of his remains to hide the evidence.
Tension develops between the sisters as they disagree on how to proceed. Elena and Paula want to keep the secret, while Cris initially wants to go to the authorities. However, her sisters convince her not to, so they band together and bury the body. The sisters want to protect each other, but the weight of their guilt changes how they treat one another.
One of the highlights of the series is the realistic characterization, as the sisters react honestly to the conflict. Their tense dialogue helps the audience understand how scared they are.
The cinematography also enhances the series by building suspense and conveying the sisters’ fear and nervousness, using dark lighting and close-up shots that focus on their facial expressions.
Likewise, the soundtrack builds the mood. During emotional moments, lyrical music plays softly, while pop songs enhance the more exciting scenes.
While the series has some outstanding qualities, the pacing is sometimes slow, especially in the mid-series episodes, and the flashbacks make the storyline confusing.
The sisters want to protect each other, but the weight of their guilt changes how they treat one another.
Additionally, the plot becomes predictable at times, such as when the sisters decide to hide the accident. Nonetheless, the ending is satisfying because it provides closure. Revealing how the sisters are haunted by their actions years later, it illustrates how one decision can have lasting effects.
Encouraging viewers to think carefully about the choices they make and the consequences that may follow, the message of “That Night” is one to remember.
