A new resource, the Confidence Closet, is equipping students with essentials to go through their day feeling comfortable, prepared and self-assured.
Introduced to students, faculty and staff on Feb. 11, the Confidence Closet is located in the back room of school nurse Schlameuss’ office. It is funded by a $3,290 nonrenewable grant from the Bergen County Youth Services Commission, allowing schools across the district, which received a total of $11,550, to provide essential supplies to students in need.
The Confidence Closet is stocked with a variety of hygiene and personal care products, like body spray, dental floss, deodorant, lotion and soap. Hair care items such as clips, conditioner and scrunchies are also available. Additionally, students can access clothing, a hairdryer and a steamer. The resource is extensive, filling three storage cabinets, and students can even fill a bag with items to take home.
“[The Confidence Closet is] providing access to kids that don’t have it as easy as some kids do and giving them the confidence they need to feel presentable,” Schlameuss said.
She said the Confidence Closet can make a meaningful impact on students’ lives.
“Having these resources at school might make sure everyone can focus on learning instead of worrying about basic needs.”
“When they come to school, they might withdraw or not engage in school as much. Maybe if they had those things, that could motivate them to get involved and feel comfortable,” Schlameuss said.
Senior Michael Monahan said students should not hesitate to use this resource, which they can obtain confidentially.
“There is no shame in asking for help, especially asking school officials. They would not shame you, or out you or tell your classmates,” Monahan said. “It’s [there] for you to feel [more] comfortable and better in a school environment.”
Monahan said these resources help students feel at ease.
“They do not have to worry about their appearance or hygiene. This can help prevent social anxiety caused by these insecurities,” Monahan said. “It’s an amazing addition to the school.”
Senior Isabella Servedio said the Confidence Closet is a welcome addition to the nurse’s office.
“Not every student has access to things they might need during the day, and it can help students feel more comfortable and prepared for school,” Servedio said. “Having these resources at school might make sure everyone can focus on learning instead of worrying about basic needs.”
Servedio said she would encourage students to donate to the Confidence Closet.
“Donating is a simple way to help other students by making sure the closet continues helping people,” Servedio said.
She said students should recognize it as a normal part of the school.
“There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. The closet is there to help students, and everyone needs help sometimes,” said Servedio.
