Growing up, I was constantly bouncing between schools, but that finally changed when I moved from Orlando, Florida, to Lyndhurst in June 2021. Since then, I’ve been able to form connections I never thought were possible.
When I arrived at Lyndhurst Middle School in eighth grade, I was somewhat timid because I didn’t really care to get to know anyone. As the years went on, I made friends, and for the first time, I felt like I belonged.
Not only did I form everlasting friendships, but I also received a lot of support from my teachers.
Art teacher Mrs. Almeida has mentored me since I was a freshman. I’ve taken her classes every year, including Advanced Placement Studio Art this school year, which has been a great experience. She has always provided me with useful feedback, whether for assignments in her class or other classes.
As the years went on, I made friends, and for the first time, I felt like I belonged.
I’m also grateful to The Lighthouse adviser Ms. Pastor. My three years in the journalism program have sharpened my digital art skills and given me the reassurance to share my writing. While the class has challenged me, working my way up from a two-year staff member to an editor has been rewarding.
As I prepare to continue my journey as a business major at Fairleigh Dickinson University at the Florham Campus in Madison, I embrace the advice to do what you love and accept help when offered.
An experience that seems scary or different is not necessarily bad, as it can lead to personal growth. Life isn’t easy, but staying calm, keeping an open mind and moving forward with confidence never fails.
