When I joined The Lighthouse last year, I never expected that it would become such an important part of my life. I was shy and reserved, doubting whether I was capable of putting myself out there.
Being part of the journalism program was intimidating at first, especially with such a talented staff, but my friends pushed me to take that first step — and I’m so glad I did.
One of my favorite memories of The Lighthouse was receiving my first two art assignments. As someone who has always enjoyed drawing, seeing my illustrations in the newspaper was both exciting and terrifying.
Having a strong support system made all the difference, and I am forever thankful for the people who believed in me before I fully believed in myself.
I also developed a love for writing music reviews, and over time, I became proud of the work I once felt too nervous to share.
I never saw myself as a leader. I thank The Lighthouse adviser Ms. Pastor for proving me wrong. As a freshman, I pushed myself too hard and measured my worth by grades. Now, as a senior and webmaster, I understand that leadership is about growing through uncertainty and trusting myself no matter what.
More than anything, I have learned the value of surrounding myself with positive people. My family, friends and teachers gave me the encouragement I needed during moments of insecurity. Having a strong support system made all the difference, and I am forever thankful for the people who believed in me before I fully believed in myself.
Throughout high school, music became my escape and my motivation. Chorale director Ms. Wise taught me confidence, discipline and the power of expression. Participating in music-related activities and volunteering changed my perspective by showing me how much I value community and connection.
These epiphanies led me to decide on a career where I can make a positive impact and help others, which is what I plan to do as a veterinary and biomedical sciences major at Pennsylvania State University in University Park.
I will always remember LHS as the place that taught me to be independent, resilient and willing to embrace opportunities that scared me.
My advice to other students is simple: do not let fear overcome you. Never let it stop you from trying, because often, the best parts of your life begin the moment you decide to take a leap and expand your horizons.
