My father often tells the story of when he was studying journalism at Pennsylvania State University in University Park and was offered a position writing for The Daily Collegian’s football beat.
He always follows the anecdote by saying he is glad he turned it down because that led him to where he is today, serving as an elementary school principal. Though my father didn’t become a professional journalist, he still uses the skills he learned.
I feel similarly when I reflect on my experience in eighth grade when my English teacher, Mrs. Maloupis, recommended me for LHS’ journalism elective. As a timid student, I was terrified of presenting my writing and illustrations, but her faith in me pushed me past that fear.
This role has allowed me to inform others while expressing my creativity through bulletin boards, slideshows and social media posts.
Joining The Lighthouse my freshman year gave me the confidence to explore new passions. I realized that if I could share my work with my peers, I could go even further and participate in LHS’ semiannual poetry slams.
During my sophomore year, I became involved in the performing arts, joining the chorale, the play and the musical. Although my packed schedule left no room for journalism that year, I made sure to return as a junior.
Having served as a two-year managing editor, I reflect on the experience with gratitude. This role has allowed me to inform others while expressing my creativity through bulletin boards, slideshows and social media posts.
Thank you to The Lighthouse adviser Ms. Pastor for her commitment to the journalism program. She not only ensures the publication is of the highest quality but also creates a welcoming environment for the entire staff.
Even during my hiatus from journalism, I was fortunate to learn from Ms. Pastor in her English II Honors class. She showed me what dedication to education looks like, teaching me techniques that enabled me to graduate as valedictorian.
I also extend my gratitude to the editors-in-chief, seniors Zahara Chowdhury and Alexandra Lourenço, who are just as committed to this publication as our adviser, and to my fellow two-year managing editor, senior Nikalena Iacono, for making this demanding position less daunting.
Like my father, I decided not to pursue a career in journalism, but I will carry with me the hard and soft skills I have developed as I study fashion merchandising in the Honors Program at Marist University in Poughkeepsie, New York.
I know the choices I make will guide me toward where I’m meant to be — and I move forward ready to create, take risks and make the most of every opportunity.
