The girls volleyball team finished its regular season on Oct. 28 with a 21-5 record, up from last year’s 16-12.
Junior outside hitter Jaylin Vuono Reid, a three-year varsity player and two-year floor captain, said the players’ achievements are a product of their skills and teamwork.
“Everyone comes from different club [teams] or not playing before, [but] we were able to take our talent and come together as a team,” Vuono Reid said. “You could all be great individuals, but if you don’t work together as a team, it won’t work.”
Vuono Reid said communication is particularly important in her role as floor captain, which means she takes on captain responsibilities during games.
“I have to make sure that whenever we’re struggling to play as a team, everyone continues to pick each other up. I have to make sure that everything’s going right, and I communicate what the coaches need to the other players,” Vuono Reid said.
“You could all be great individuals, but if you don’t work together as a team, it won’t work.”
Senior middle blocker Christina Mizeski, who has been on varsity for three years, said the new coaches, Head Coach Kesack and Assistant Coach Jordan, have contributed to the team’s success.
“They’re really awesome. They keep us motivated and engaged. They care so much about the program [that] how can you not care when playing? They always fight for us and get us hyped before games, and that really helps,” Mizeski said.

She said volleyball has taught her the importance of consistency.
“That [means] showing up every day, having the same energy every practice and game and resisting the urge to get in your head. I also got much better at moving on after a bad day,” Mizeski said.
When Mizeski is not playing volleyball, she throws shot put and discus for indoor and outdoor track and field. She said volleyball sets itself apart from those sports, where athletes compete individually.
“This is the only sport of the three that is truly a team sport,” Mizeski said. “All of your improvement is up to you [in track and field]. Volleyball is about being part of something bigger than your stats.”
Senior right-side hitter Gabriela Kalisiak said volleyball’s unique quality is its uplifting nature.
“Volleyball players have to get into a huddle and cheer for everything. Even if we do bad[ly], we have to cheer,” Kalisiak said.
Looking ahead to the post-season, Kalisiak said her goals are for the team to work on its defense and win states.
“[I want to] show people that we are actually a good volleyball team, that we deserve to be higher up on the ranks than we actually are,” said Kalisiak.
