From affordable finds to expensive attire, thrift stores feature one-of-a-kind pieces that can match anyone’s budget, personality, and style. If you are new to thrifting, it can be a little intimidating. However, here are my favorite tips to help beginners set off on the right foot for this delightful hobby:

1. Make thrift stores your preferred shopping destination. Before visiting big box stores and retail chains, support your local vintage store. Even with rising prices, buying second-hand is way less expensive than buying new.

2. Shop in the morning. Arriving at the store as soon as it opens will allow you to avoid crowds and have the first pick of the merchandise that has just become available. Don’t snooze on the great selection at thrift stores, as once an item is purchased, you likely won’t see it again.

3. Keep safety in mind as you shop. Some thrift stores can be dirty, so be sure to carry hand sanitizer and wear a face mask. Cleaning and disinfecting your shopping cart or basket is also essential.

4. Dress for the occasion. Some people may not realize it, but wearing the right outfit to go thrifting will make your trip much more successful. If you are shopping for clothing, wear something lightweight so you can try on items easily. Not all thrift stores have dressing rooms, so be prepared to slip on a shirt, skirt, sweater or even pants over what you are already wearing.

5. Always check the condition. Many of us have made the mistake of not thoroughly looking over a piece of clothing while thrifting, only to bring it home and realize that it is damaged or stained. Inspecting your items before buying them will save you the hassle of having to throw them out, as many thrift stores do not have a return policy.

6. Tailor your finds to get a perfect fit. Altering thrifted clothing will give you that polished look without being too expensive. While thrifting, search for high-quality and durable fabrics because well-made items are easier to alter and will last a long time.

7. Shop with cash to avoid impulse buys. If you tend to buy more than your budget allows, bring a set amount of money with you. You cannot overspend if you don’t actually have the money on hand to do so.

8. Give yourself a time limit. Thrift stores can be intimidating, especially for newcomers. It’s quite easy to get pulled into a several-hour-long trip when you’re thrifting. Therefore, set a time limit on your shopping, such as 45 minutes per store. By setting a time limit, you won’t burn out as easily, and it won’t take up your whole day.

9. Clean your thrift finds. Thrift shops can offer amazing bargains, but be prepared to launder your items before wearing them. Since they are likely to have already been worn, it is important to wash them thoroughly to reduce one’s chances of exposure to bacteria and fungi as well as parasitic and viral infections.

10. Visit plenty of thrift stores so you find the ones that best match your style. The more frequently you thrift and the more stores you visit, the better your chances will be of having success.

As in all situations, don’t be afraid of failure. Not every garment will suit you, and that is okay. Thrifting takes patience and effort, but the results will be worth it when you take home some great garments and accessories.
