I started my first day at LHS with journalism, where I quickly realized I was the only freshman in the class. At that moment, my nerves were going crazy. However, from then on, I never ceased to surprise myself with my accomplishments.
Even before I started high school, I knew how crucial it would be to become involved in the activities LHS has to offer, so I immediately registered for a variety of clubs and organizations. I’m happy journalism was one of them, as it has been one of the most impactful organizations I joined.
Over the past four years, The Lighthouse allowed me to expand my interests and strengthen my love for photography. As a staff photographer, I experimented with a hobby I always enjoyed, and it even exposed me to new aspects of the LHS community such as the Bear Cave student section and the poetry slams.
I have also contributed to The Lighthouse as an artist, staff writer, editor and webmaster. I could not have advanced in any of these positions without adviser Ms. Pastor’s belief in my ability. She assured me that I was capable of taking on greater responsibilities in the journalism program. I admire her dedication to The Lighthouse and her students, and I appreciate everything she has done for me throughout high school.
I also want to thank Future Business Leaders of America Club co-advisor Mrs. Silvelo. As a freshman, I would never have pictured myself speaking in front of a crowd or doing a radio call to promote women’s empowerment, but I did all this and more thanks to Mrs. Silvelo. She helped me find the courage to run for FBLA vice president and advance to serve as president this year.
Over the past four years, The Lighthouse allowed me to expand my interests and strengthen my love for photography.
I cannot thank Mrs. Silvelo enough for her encouragement and pep talks, without which I would not be the person I am today. I will forever remember the important lessons she taught me, and they will continue to guide me throughout my life.
It is sad to see my high school years coming to a close, as it means that I am saying goodbye to friends, sports teams, inspirational teachers and amazing experiences. However, I am extremely excited that I will be attending James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia in the fall.
As a marketing major, I will be sure to use the skills I have developed in high school. No matter where my education and career take me, I will forever remember LHS and its positive impact on the person I have become.
