The girls basketball team finished its regular season on Feb. 15 with a winning record of 17-9.
The team made it to the semifinal round of the Bergen County Invitational on Feb. 10 where it lost 37-29 at an away game against Westwood High School.
Sophomore guard Mylah Campbell, who joined varsity this year, said the Bergen County Invitational helped the players recognize their capabilities.
“The [Bergen County Invitational] was full of some challenging games and some less challenging games,” Campbell said. “[During] most of the games, the girls worked their hardest to show what skills they really had individually and as a team.”
Campbell said even though the team lost in the semifinal round, her teammates gave their best effort and made it as far as they could.
Campbell said she saw the team grow and improve upon its weaknesses throughout the season.
“The changes I saw in the team during the season would be everyone’s ability to have their own skill and recognize it in the time they needed to have a breakthrough,” Campbell said.
Junior guard Kyla Marino, who is in her third season on varsity, said the camaraderie between the starters–junior Asya Akar, senior Kiera Docherty, sophomore Brooke Harper, junior Sam Mayer and herself–sets this season apart from others.
“Even though we lost [in the] first round of states, we did end the season on a high note.”
“Sometimes we all get food together, and because we hang out and socialize off the court, it helps on the court because we communicate well with each other,” Marino said.
She said the players were disappointed they did not make it into the Bergen County Tournament. LHS missed the team cutoff by two spots, so the team ended up in the second bracket, known as the Bergen Invitational Tournament.
“We were all kind of upset we didn’t make it to the real bracket and kind of wanted to show that we can compete with those teams that did make it into the bracket,” Marino said.
The team lost its first state game on Feb. 21 at home against Jonathan Dayton High School of Springfield Township with a score of 34-43.
Junior guard Alexia Marmorato, who joined varsity last year, said the team’s biggest accomplishment of the season was making two-year Head Coach Boyce proud.
“He was happy with how each player was growing and developing as an athlete,” Marmorato said.
She said the players improved every day by taking their drills and reps during practice seriously.
“Even though we lost [in the] first round of states, we did end the season on a high note,” Marmorato said. “We have had several accomplishments throughout our season and ended with a winning record.”
