“The Deliverance” is a gripping horror movie that follows the Jackson family as they experience horrifying and inexplicable encounters a few weeks after moving into their new house in Indiana. Their lives are forever changed by supernatural and unimaginable events, making this movie intriguing and captivating.
The film strikes a perfect balance between addressing a ghostly figure’s potential motives and delving into the family’s complicated backstory.
At the start of the movie, viewers are introduced to the mother, Ebony (Andra Day), and witness the strained relationship she has with her family.
As the film progresses, Ebony realizes that her youngest child, Andre (Anthony B. Jenkins), has begun acting rudely and strangely.
There is a powerful scene in which Ebony’s eldest son, Nate (Caleb McLaughlin), hides a bottle from Ebony to stop her from drinking because he knows she becomes ill-tempered when she is drunk. This shows that despite her best efforts to change, Ebony cannot control her temper.
It is obvious that Ebony’s three children are traumatized by her alcoholism, so they look to their grandmother, Alberta (Glenn Close), for support whenever their mother gets angry.
As the film progresses, Ebony realizes that her youngest child, Andre (Anthony B. Jenkins), has begun acting rudely and strangely. She notices bruises that appear on his skin out of seemingly nowhere and sees him talking into the air as if someone were there, which makes her worried.
When Ebony questions Andre, he says he has been talking to his friend, Trey. Ebony tries ignoring it, but more strange events transpire. Andre keeps running into the basement door, which explains some of his bruises.
On several occasions, Ebony reaches out for help, but medical professionals and a social worker all ignore her, even blaming her for Andre’s bruises because of how she used to treat her children.
Ebony is in a stressful situation because she knows something is wrong but can’t do anything about it, which is one of the most upsetting parts of this movie.
In the midst of chaos, though, comes hope, as Ebony rises to the challenges she faces to be a good mother and support her children.
Viewers will be impressed with Ebony’s strength and drawn in by this dark and mysterious film. Setting itself apart from other movies in the horror genre because of its well-developed plot and interesting characters, “The Deliverance” is a must-watch Netflix original.
