When the grass is covered by snow and puddles turn to ice, it is time for a wardrobe makeover. Just like the seasons change, so must our outerwear.
Some of the most popular trends in winter fashion have revolved around jackets. Over the years, layered outfits have been all the rage, but layering can easily take a turn in the wrong direction if it is not done correctly.
In 2021, sherpa jackets rose in popularity, especially after model and social media influencer Kendall Jenner was pictured wearing a sherpa jacket from Alo Yoga’s Sherpa collection. In 2022, the North Face puffer jacket arose as a new trend.
Puffer jackets are another popular choice. They provide warmth and are durable enough to withstand harsh winter and rainy conditions.
However, puffer jackets are not for everyone. Some people, like myself, prefer a more cozy and comfortable feel when wearing a coat. Puffer jackets tend to restrict movement and are more bulky than sherpa jackets. Their warmth and durability often come at the cost of comfort.
Although sherpa jackets are not necessarily the warmest option, they stand out for their style and comfort.
Sherpa jackets are ideal for those looking for a relaxed and cozy coat that can be styled in a variety of ways. Sherpa material is very soft, resembling sheep’s wool. It typically has cotton or polyester lining, while puffer jackets have synthetic or nylon insulation.
In contrast, options for styling a puffer jacket are limited. Puffer jackets typically pair well with more casual outfits, but not dressy outfits.
Sherpa jackets can be paired with almost anything. Whether you are wearing a casual outfit or dressing up for a special occasion, a sherpa jacket will keep you warm and has a more glamorous appearance than a puffer jacket.

Some brands are now combining the two jackets to achieve outstanding warmth and comfort. Two Cumberland, for instance, sells a puffer jacket lined with soft sherpa material. Columbia and Hollister have started making puffer jackets in sherpa material.
Personally, I always choose the comfort and style of a sherpa jacket over the durability of a puffer jacket. I feel much more comfortable and relaxed in a soft and cozy coat that keeps me warm enough for New Jersey weather. In addition, I often dress nicely for events like ceremonies, dinners and family gatherings, and sherpa jackets pair well with my dressy outfits. Puffer jackets typically make me feel more bulky, and the insulation does not bring me as much comfort as cotton or faux fur.
So, how do you solve the dilemma of choosing between these two jackets? Weigh the pros and cons of each jacket, and decide which is right for you. And rest assured, when it comes to staying on trend, you can’t go wrong with either of these in-style options.
