Artificial intelligence is becoming progressively more popular. People now use it for school, work and entertainment. Even though there are some reasons why AI has shaped society for the better, its presence in daily life worries me.
First, AI can be dangerous. The rise of AI, specifically AI phone calls, is especially troubling. Malicious actors can use AI technology to create convincing phone calls to make it sound like a family member or trusted person is on the other end. This can lead to fraud, identity theft and scams since AI can impersonate bank representatives and government officials.
On the positive side, AI can offer personalized learning experiences and adapt to a student’s learning capabilities. However, over-reliance on AI can adversely affect students’ creativity, learning and development of logical thinking.
I have witnessed the effects of such a scam firsthand through my aunt in Ecuador, who received a call from an unfamiliar number. The person on the other end of the phone told her she had won something, which convinced her to share her personal information, ultimately resulting in the theft of her money.
AI also negatively influences how kids learn in school. On the positive side, AI can offer personalized learning experiences and adapt to a student’s learning capabilities. However, over-reliance on AI can adversely affect students’ creativity, learning and development of logical thinking. Additionally, privacy issues are a concern, as AI tools track student data, raising questions about how that information could be used.
Students who rely heavily on AI struggle to use their minds, leading to an inability to tackle real-world problems and tasks. For instance, I have seen my classmates rely on AI to complete assignments, and consequently, they struggle on essays, tests and other assessments. The temptation to take this shortcut is high, and the results are problematic.
Furthermore, AI is concerning in the workforce, as it is increasingly replacing human workers in various industries, automating tasks that used to be performed by humans. From customer service to manufacturing, businesses use AI machines, such as robots and machine learning, as cost-saving measures. While some argue that AI can create new opportunities, the fast rate of automation may outpace the efforts of people vying for new jobs. It is sad to see hardworking people displaced as AI takes over.
Automation is shifting the labor market, while AI-powered tools are impacting the boundaries of art, science and communication.
AI’s impact on art is particularly concerning, ruining its creative and intriguing aspects. It is unfair to rely on AI to create art pieces when humans have put so much thought and time into pieces receiving less attention than AI-generated artwork.
AI-generated art often draws upon existing works without artists’ consent, leading to debates about copyright infringement and the devaluation of human creativity. For instance, AI platforms have replicated photographers’ styles without permission, promoting calls for stronger intellectual property rights protections.
As it becomes more integrated into people’s everyday lives, AI challenges traditional concepts of security, education, work and art. This shift is promoting new conversations about the role of technology, and I hope individuals, schools and companies will use the technology more cautiously moving forward.
