The Monthly Pessimist: Senioritis plagues the Class of 2019

Do you constantly snooze your alarm in the morning and struggle to wake up for school? Do you find yourself saying, “Forget it, I’ll just do the assignment later” or “I’ll wake up early tomorrow to do it”? Do you have trouble staying awake in class? Do you feel like school has become a waste of time? If you said yes to any of these question, you may have senioritis.

Senioritis is the feeling students have during their last year of high school or college in which they feel an extreme lack of motivation.

I have a severe case of senioritis. If you don’t believe me, this article I’m writing right now was due yesterday.

As a senior, I only have three or four classes that actually matter, so I often ask myself, “Why do I bother going to school?” So I don’t, and that’s why I also took the day off to write this article and complete the many other assignments I have due today or tomorrow.

With responsibilities outside of school like work, sports, chores and applying for college, school can seem like a huge waste of time… because it is. I would much rather sit at home and teach myself something useful instead of showing up to school and wasting my life away.

We are forced to wake up early and go to school and get good grades when many of us have already committed to a college and have most of our graduation requirements completed. We only show up because we have to, and since that is the only reason, none of us have any motivation to try. I have learned that it is not the end of the world if I don’t get an assignment done or if I fall short of earning an A in a class.

If you asked me what types of grades I wanted to receive three years ago, I would tell you straight As. Now, I am totally fine with a B or C. As long as I pass, I don’t really care.

I used to be the type of student to stay up until 2 a.m. to finish an assignment. Now, I say to myself, “It isn’t worth it,” and then I take a fat nap.

I like to define senioritis as the condition where students give up on school because they are very tired of trying and cannot find a good enough reason to continue working. This is why high school seniors will put in the minimal effort required to graduate high school.

Graduating is the only known cure for senioritis because students can finally move on with their lives and either worry about college or whatever their future career will be.

Although high school has been a fun and overall good experience, I cannot wait to get out of this prison and finally be free.
