This year is wrapping up fast, so buckle up because we’re taking a ride down memory lane. Without further ado, here is a list of The Lighthouse staff’s top picks of 2019:
Best Movie: “Avengers: Endgame”
In April, Marvel fans were hit with an unforgettable blockbuster that revealed the end of the road for some of their most beloved heroes. Tony Stark’s sacrifice will forever be a moment that remains in the hearts of fans. Audiences “loved the movie 3000.” Making over $2.798 billion at the box office and becoming the highest grossing film of all time, “Avengers: Endgame” certainly made its mark on moviegoers.
Best TV Show: “Stranger Things”
This Netflix series premiered on July 15, 2016 and follows the paranormal adventures of a young group of kids in the 1980s. The show has been widely acclaimed and has earned many accolades and nominations. Its third season premiered on July 4 and broke viewing records for Netflix with 40.7 million households having watched the show in its first four days. The show has since been renewed for a fourth season.
Best Song: “Truth Hurts” by Lizzo
The song was originally released in 2017 but became a viral hit in 2019 after gaining popularity through TikTok and the Netflix original film “Someone Great.” It became Lizzo’s first No. 1 song on Billboard Hot 100, and the music video has since garnered over 100 million views. The song is certified double platinum and continues to be a popular anthem for single people.
Best Artist: Post Malone
Austin Richard Post, known as Post Malone, is a 24-year-old singer and songwriter. His debut single “White Iverson” reached the top 20 of Billboard Hot 100. In 2018, he collaborated on a song called “Sunflower” for the film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which reached No. 1 on Billboard. He released his third studio album “Hollywood’s Bleeding” this past September, becoming his second No. 1 album to date.
Best YouTuber: David Dobrik
The 23-year-old Slovakian born YouTuber started his career on Vine and began uploading YouTube videos in 2015. His videos are edited into short humorous segments that total four minutes, 20 seconds. Since then, he has amassed over 14 million subscribers, hosted the 2019 Teen Choice Awards and is a judge on “America’s Most Musical Family.” He is best known for giving away cars and traveling to colleges to help students with their tuition.
Best App: TikTok
This app launched in 2017 but did not gain popularity until 2018 after its merger with Musical.ly. TikTok allows users to create a short video of themselves which often includes music in the background and filters. It continues to be a popular app in 2019, publicizing many trends and challenges that teens partake in today.
Best Dance Trend: The Woah Dance
The trend started on TikTok and has since spread beyond the platform. “Hitting the woah” is when a dancer makes a quick, small circular motion with his or her fists and freezes in that position when the beat drops. It is usually performed to the song “Woah” by KRYPTO9095 and has been made into a viral challenge that kids perform on social media.
Best Video Game: Mario Kart Tour
The new mobile game debuted on Sept. 25 and immediately took the No. 1 spot in the racing category in the app store. It is the fourteenth installment in the Mario Kart series and the first mobile installment. The game got 90.1 million downloads in its first week of availability and has become the most addictive game of 2019.
Best Fashion Trend: Nike Air Force 1
These sneakers were created with the purpose of embodying the popularity of basketball and the Nike Tailwind back in the 1980s. It is considered the first Nike shoe to include air technology and was popularized by rappers including Jay-Z and Nelly. Over the years, it lost popularity, but it has made a comeback. They are selling out in stores again, and Nike is releasing newer models.
Best Sports Moment: United States Women’s soccer team wins 2nd consecutive World Cup
The U.S. women’s team won the 2019 World Cup, making it their fourth World Cup win and second consecutive win. They had a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands in the finale of the tournament on July 7, 2019, becoming the first team in history to win four World Cup titles. During the group stage match against Thailand, they broke the record for most goals scored in a single World Cup match for both men and women with 13 goals.
