The Lighthouse’s Athlete of the Month is senior Madison Schaefer. She is the starting point guard on the basketball team. This is her fourth year playing basketball at LHS and her second year on the varsity team.
After losing more than four graduating seniors last June, Schaefer said she knew she would have to work hard to prove herself to her coach.
“The seniors who graduated were so talented, and losing them was definitely a hit to the team. I wanted to show that I deserved a starting spot and that I would always play to the best of my abilities,” Schaefer said.

She said basketball has always been a passion of hers.
Schaefer started playing basketball at just seven years old on a Lyndhurst club team.
“The first time I picked up the ball, I knew that I wanted to pursue an athletic career in basketball. I just felt such a connection to it,” Schaefer said

After playing with that team for seven years, she made the decision to continue playing in high school, where she said she fell even more in love with the sport.
Schaefer excels on the court and performed especially well at an away game against Butler High School on Feb. 13 where she scored 15 points.
“Getting recognized is one of the best feelings ever. I’m just so happy that I finally showed everyone what I can really do,” Schaefer said.

She intends to major in elementary education in college and plans on playing college basketball, though she has not yet committed to a school.
“I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m so excited to see what happens. Basketball has always been in my life, and I don’t know what I would do without it,” said Schaefer.
