April 22 will mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, an annual event where people all over the world celebrate the planet and take steps to preserve it. The fact that this day has been around for 50 years is outstanding because of the attention it brings to a very important cause.
Earth Day was founded by Gaylord Nelson, an American politician and environmentalist who believed there should be a day dedicated to focusing on global environmental issues.
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrating Earth Day might be pretty challenging. You won’t be able to celebrate with all your friends or your whole family because of social distancing, but that should not stop you from being mindful of the environment and your everyday impact on it.
Some ways to reduce your negative impact on the Earth are drinking from reusable cups, using a metal straw, turning off the lights when you leave a room and recycling the products you use throughout the day. You can even plant a tree or flowers, which may help you relieve your stress and raise the spirits of those around you.
We may be stuck in our homes on April 22, but it is important not to overlook Earth Day’s 50th anniversary and the environmental issues affecting the world today. On Earth Day—and every day, actually—it is important to do your part to help the planet.
