The first thing that comes to mind when hearing about Galentine’s Day is Valentine’s Day. As the name implies, this is the occasion when women celebrate their female friendships.
Especially for girls without a significant other, Galentine’s Day, which takes place on Feb. 13 every year, is the perfect way to participate in the festivities of Valentine’s Day. It is just as fun to celebrate as Valentine’s Day because there are so many ways girls can celebrate with each other. For example, they can get together for a game night, gift exchange, meal, painting day, rom-com movie night or spa day.
Galentine’s Day reflects female empowerment because it sends the message that women do not need a man to feel loved or appreciated. Women are often shamed for not being in relationships and not following the stereotypical life path with marriage and kids. However, on Galentine’s Day, women honor their independence and self-reliance.
Although some may view this day as depressing, female high school students should not feel pressured to be in a relationship. High school is hard enough as it is, and Valentine’s Day adds extra pressure for girls to have a significant other. No girl should feel that her worth is minimized because she is single.
Galentine’s Day reflects female empowerment because it sends the message that women do not need a man to feel loved or appreciated.
Galentine’s Day also shines a light on the impact of female bonds. The camaraderie between women is often what helps girls get through hard times in their young adult lives. For example, if a girl experiences a breakup, her female friends are there to pick her right back up. These strong bonds bring happiness and make a woman even stronger. Their trust in each other allows them to share their opinions with brutal honesty and express their vulnerability.
Galentine’s Day is definitely as fun as Valentine’s Day and maybe even better. It is also important because taking the time to appreciate meaningful female friendships strengthens these connections. Therefore, take some time this Sunday to recognize your gals and reflect on the joy they bring to your life.
